- Over 8,500 Wishes Have Been Made Possible for Kids With Life-Threatening Medical Conditions, Thanks to the Award-Winning UAW-GM and GM Sponsorship of the Make-A-Wish Foundation®

DETROIT – Sept. 20, 2006 –USA WEEKEND Magazine’s 16 th annual Make A Difference Day, Oct. 28, is a national day of lending a hand to others – a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. As part of this year’s occasion, the General Motors Corporation (GM) and participating GM dealers across the country are generously reaching out in their communities once again.
In support of Make A Difference Day and the ongoing sponsorship of the Make-A-Wish Foundation by the UAW-GMCenter for Human Resources (UAW-GM CHR) and GM, GM dealers are pledging donations, now through Oct. 28, to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions in their communities.

This is UAW-GM CHR and GM’s fourth year of participating in the Make A Difference Day campaign to benefit the Foundation. Last year, 550 GM dealers across the country (a record response!) raised more than $1 million, enough to grant 154 wishes for Make-A-Wish ® children in their communities. To date (2003-2005), the UAW-GM CHR and GM Make A Difference Day campaign efforts have helped the Foundation’s 69 chapters grant 548 wishes. Overall, the sponsorship has helped grant more than 8,500 wishes since 1999.

In recognition of this outstanding community service and ongoing commitment, UAW-GM CHR and GM were honored at a reception in Detroit in April by USA WEEKEND Magazine, actor and philanthropist Paul Newman and the Detroit Free Press for their 2005 Make A Difference Day campaign with a $10,000 donation to the Foundation. In addition to Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, Pontiac, Buick, Saturn, Saab and HUMMER, GM divisions also supporting the 2006 campaign are GMAC Financial Services, one of the world’s leading financial services companies; XM Satellite Radio, America’s number-one satellite radio service, delivering more than 170 channels of uninterrupted, digital-quality broadcasting to more than 7 million subscribers; GM Card, with no annual fee, competitive interest and which gives you five percent earnings on your purchases towards the purchase or lease of an eligible new GM car, truck or SUV ; and GM Goodwrench , the one and only GM expert. With GM training and advanced diagnostic equipment, there's nobody better to help maintain the health of your GM vehicle.

Commented Mark LaNeve, Vice President, Vehicle Sales, Service & Marketing, GM NorthAmerica, I personally can think of no better cause than one that benefits children … especially kids who deserve a break from their daily battles with life-threatening medical conditions. I am inspired by these courageous children and by the generosity of all who reach out to help them.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Born in 1980 when a group of caring individuals helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, the Foundation is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 69 chapters in the U.S. and its territories. With the help of generous donors and nearly 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants more than 12,500 wishes a year and has granted more than 141,000 wishes in the U.S. since inception. In 1999, the UAW-GM Center for Human Resources (UAW-GM CHR)and General Motors (GM)announced a national sponsorship of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Together, they made a substantial financial commitment to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. This gift is really an extension of their common goals and beliefs—a commitment to community, family and helping those who need it most.

UAW-GM CHR and GM have already helped to grant thousands of wishes. Their sponsorship has helped raise funds for the Foundation through GM dealer donations and community-based promotions. With the help of Make-A-Wish volunteers and other generous people, they are truly Making Smiles Standard Equipment for children all over the country.
